This week’s Cross Country meet was held at Lady Northcote Camp, Rowsley.   After a very cool early morning, it wasn’t long before the sun was shining, and perfect conditions greeted our athletes for their weekly competition.

Prior to races commencing athletes joined our Education Officer, Bethan White for a walk around the course and warm-up.  This will be a weekly routine and all athletes are asked to arrive by 10.15am to participate.

The Under 11 and 12’s were the first race for the morning, as they completed 2 laps of a 1km course.  After the first lap Oliver Carr held a very narrow lead over Mackenzie Estlick.  The second half of the race saw Mackenzie’s experience show out as she took control of the race and cross the finish line to claim an 8 second victory over Oliver, with the much-improved Hannah Lee in 3rd place.

The Under 9 and 10 athletes competed over a 1500m distance; 1 lap of the 1km course finishing with a lap of the 500m course.  This race was the highlight of the day with Nicholas Ide and Oliver Quick battling out over the entire race.  While Nick lead majority of the race, Oliver was hot on his heels with both boys showing great friendly competitiveness.  The final result came right down to the finish with Nick taking the win in 6:19.39 mins and Oliver 2nd with a PB of 6:20.75 mins.  Under 9 athlete Patrick Lovett finished in 3rd place, 1st for his age group.  Imogen Lidgett-Egan was the first girl home.

Our enthusiastic Under 6’s were next up for the day.  Little separated both Harrison Johansen and Imogen Borg as they ran neck and neck for the 500m race.  Harrison’s fast finish saw him claim his first Cross Country win.

The Under 7 & 8 athletes were next to tackle the 1km course.  After a fast start, athletes settled in as they headed out around the surrounds of the campgrounds.  Harrison Lovett quickly opened up a lead over the rest of the field and was never threatened throughout the race and went on to claim a convincing win.  Meanwhile, Myah Estlick came from behind to storm home and pip Mathilde Grant on the line. Well done to Mathilde who recorded a PB performance.

The open age athletes were the final event as they completed 3 laps of the 1km course.  The Under 13 girls dominated the 3km race with Elise Cook taking the win, Dannielle Ide in 2nd place and Tryah Doyle in 3rd.

Next week’s meet will be held at Caledonian Park, Ballan.  Runners will meet at the end of Jopling Street, in the carpark directly behind the Caravan Park at 10.15am for a warm-up.  A reminder, there are no toilets at this venue.
