A small number of dedicated and keen athletes attended our Cross Country meet on Saturday morning at Myrniong Recreation Reserve. With the freezing temperatures, organisers decided to merge several races, however athletes still ran their assigned distances.
The Under 6, 7 and 8 athletes headed off together. The Under 6’s cut back on their return at the 250m mark while the rest of the field head down Blackwood Street before turning around at the halfway mark to head back up the gruelling hill towards the finish line. Lucy Wise claimed victory in the Under 6 event while Lenny Closter was first across the finish line for the Under 7/8 combined 1000m event.
The Intermediate runners, consisting of Under 9, 10, 11 and 12 athletes all started their race together with the 9 & 10’s competing over 1500 metres whilst the 11/12’s competed over 2000ms. Imogen Lidgett-Egan was a convincing winner over the 1500m course while Mackenzie Estlick showed true grit to claim a comfortable victory over the remainder of the field in the 2km event.
The open age athletes battled it out over 3kms in extremely trying conditions. A tough hill climb into freezing winds certainly put runners to the test. Elise Cook, in first place was a decisive winner with Zane Rich in 2nd place followed by Danielle Ide in 3rd.
Next Saturday is our final Cross Country meet for the season. Handicap races will be conducted, where athletes will start off using handicap staggered times that have been calculated from season results. Athletes should arrive early so organisers know who is competing and handicap times can be finalised. The first race will commence at 10.30am. The theme of the day will be ‘Superheroes’ with all athletes and supporters encouraged to dress up. After all races have concluded, athletes and families will come together for end of season Cross Country Presentations, followed by morning tea. Please bring a plate.
