Bacchus Marsh was represented by 4 teams at the Little Athletics Victoria Relay Championships at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park on Saturday.

The 4×200 metre events were first up for the day. The Under 14 Boys team, consisting of Lincoln Braszell, Jonas Cukavac, Hayden Lloyd and Ryan Lister ran well finishing 7th in their heat. Next on the track for Bacchus Marsh were our Under 11 girls – Evie Ducas, Temi Olaitan, Shameka Grero and Mackenzie Estlick. The girls enjoyed their experience competing at this level and finished 8th in their heat.

After the lunch break the Mixed 4×100 metre heats were held. First up were our Under 11 team of Evie Ducas, Murphy Harrington, Alex Lloyd and Mackenzie Estlick. Although finishing 4th in their heat, a fast first heat, saw our kids narrowly miss a spot in the final. The next event saw our winning Under 10 team from the Region Championships on the track – Nicholas Ide, Sarah Burton, Ellie Conroy and Nelson Banigo. The team ran a strong race to win their heat and qualify for the final later in the afternoon. The final was expected to be a tight tussle, with the top four qualifying teams separated by less than a second. Bacchus Marsh got off to a good start with Nicholas Ide changing over to Sarah Burton who ran the second leg down the back straight. Sarah passed to the youngest member of the team, Ellie Conroy who battled it out over the third leg. Nelson Banigo anchored the team down the front straight and gobbled up his opponents one by one, to sneak the team into a podium position and claim the bronze medal for the Marsh. A fantastic achievement – Congratulations!

Well done to all athletes who have put in many hours of training for the Championships and a big thank you to our coaches Karen Lloyd, Chantelle Estlick, Gina Vasquez & Kate Conroy who have also volunteered many hours to these teams. Thank you also to the parents who have also helped at training and to those who came and supported the kids on the day.

During the Championships, Little Athletics Victoria’s CEO Anthony McIntosh and President Colin Segota made a special presentation to Nelson Banigo. Nelson was presented with his 70m & 200m Australian Best Performance from the State Track & Field Championships held in February. Congratulations Nelson.
