Perfect conditions greeted athletes for the first Cross Country meet of the 2021 season. Various courses were set around the surrounds of Masons Lane Reserve with a combination of flat and undulating ground.
This season we welcome athletes from Gisborne, Melton and Werribee Little Athletic Centres who will continue to participate in our weekly meets. In total 71 athletes competed on week 1 of competition.
The Under 6 athletes competed over a 500m course with Rylee Robinson taking line honours. The Under 7 & 8 athletes combined, racing over a 1km distance. Visiting athlete Harry Wark (Melton) and Angus Norman battled it out in the closing stages with Harry crossing the line first. Next up were the Under 9 and 10 athletes competing in the 1.5km event. Lenny Closter was strong from start to finish claiming the win while Ezekiel Horne and Melton’s Josh Bennett were not far behind. Myah Estlick was the first girl across the line, narrowly defeating Balreet Kaur Mann from Melton. Gisborne’s Elijah Marshall dominated the Under 11/12 2km event defeating his opponents by over a minute. The open age athletes, consisting of Under 13, 14, 15 & 16 athletes contested the 3km event. Matthew Elefterescu, in his first Cross Country race, was a comfortable winner while Sam White and Mackenzie Estlick claimed top 3 finishes.
Next week athletes will travel down the Western Highway to Ballan competing at the Caledonian Park. Directions – Take the 1st Ballan exit off the Western Freeway, turn left and head into Ballan. Turn right into Jopling Street, towards the Caravan Park. Continue to the end of the street and park in the car park on the left. The first race will commence at 10.30am and athletes should arrive in plenty of time to familiarise themselves with the course and warm up.
